Tempering

 

Usually quench-hardened steel is too brittle for practical use; therefore the technique of tempering is often employed to remove some of the excessive hardness. By heating the steel to a temperature less than that used during the hardening process and prolonging the time the steel is held at this temperature encourages microstructure evolution. Due to the nature of steel and its alloy, determining the tempering temperature and time is critical to the successful application of the product.
